Spain Catalonia Referendum

A man shows his symbolic Catalan identity during a referendum on Catalan independence in Vilafranca del Penedes, Spain, Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009. A total of 167 hamlets, villages and towns are taking part in the vote organized by an alliance of grassroots organizations seeking independence for the wealthy region around Barcelona. Organizers say around 700,000 people are eligible to vote, out of a total population of some 7 million in Catalonia, a region that boasts its own language and culture and where many people feel they constitute a country within a country. Organizers hope the vote which has no legal impact, will build momentum behind an independence movement for the region around Barcelona. (AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)
