Battini is being held since 2013 pending trial on charges of having taken part in an attack against the Corti sub-prefecture in 2012. Battini enrolled in September 2014 in two distance-learning courses on Corsican history, language and cultural from the University of Corsica. But the young man argues that the prison of Bois d’Arcy, where he is being held, does not meet the minimum services and conditions necessary to carry out his studies under appropriate conditions.

This is the reason why Battini requested to be moved to the prison of Osny, which he believes better conditions can be found in. But the judge and the prison administration are rejecting the transfer because another Corsican prisoner is being held there.

Associu Sulidarità group is today organizing in Bastia a solidarity event with Battini.

Young Corsican prisoner asks to be transferred into a different prison

Young Corsican prisoner Nicolas Battini put an end today to a hunger strike he was holding since April 17th. According to his lawyer Benjamin Genuini, Battini stopped his protest following support received yesterday by individuals and associations in a solidarity event in Bastia.

Battini believes yesterday’s support ensures his struggle will be taken on by Corsican groups and individuals from outside prison. Battini, 21, has been held in the Bois d’Arcy prison since 2013 pending trial. The Corsican prisoner is asking to be moved from Bois d’Arcy to the Osny prison. The judge and the prison administration reject to move him. Battini argues Bois d’Arcy does not meet the minimum conditions necessary for him to be able to study two university courses he is enrolled in since September 2014.
